Mosaic Engineering's history reflects a progression from specialized digital imaging and instrumentation through optical anti-aliasing, embedded systems, precision optics, and the development of focused technology businesses.

Different Products, Connected Technical Experience

The technologies associated with Mosaic have changed over time, but each stage added experience that could be carried into the next.

Work with cameras and imaging systems developed knowledge of sensors, lenses, electronics, image acquisition, color processing, packaging, and system integration.

Optical-filter development added deeper experience with sensor sampling, birefringence, polarization, spectral control, mechanical integration, and precision assembly.

That progression now contributes to a broader organization built around specialized engineering businesses and long-term technical capability.

Mosaic developed imaging products that brought together cameras, optics, electronics, acquisition, and application requirements within complete systems.

That systems perspective later became important when optical filtering and other components had to be engineered around the behavior of the complete camera.

Imaging work extended beyond general-purpose cameras into specialized configurations where the optical system, electronics, software, and operating environment had to work together.

This experience reinforced an engineering approach centered on the application rather than on a generic component alone.

EMBEDDED IMAGING

Moving Imaging Into Integrated Systems

Embedded camera development expanded Mosaic's experience in combining sensing, electronics, computing, interfaces, and mechanical packaging in increasingly compact systems.

The OEM smart-camera work represented a shift toward components and subsystems designed to become part of another product rather than operating only as stand-alone equipment.

That experience with OEM integration continues to be relevant wherever an optical or electronic component must be designed around the customer's larger system.

PORTABLE INSTRUMENTATION

Imaging, Computing, and Field Instrumentation

The Flicker handheld platform combined digital imaging with embedded computing and field-oriented instrument functions in a portable system.

The platform incorporated imaging, GPS, electronic-compass functions, configurable computing, external interfaces, and custom application software.

Projects of this type strengthened Mosaic's experience in bringing several technical disciplines together within one product.

OPTICAL IMAGE CORRECTION

Developing Optical Solutions for Aliasing and Moiré

Imaging-system experience increasingly led toward optical methods for controlling sampling artifacts before they became part of the recorded image.

CAMERA-SPECIFIC PRODUCTS

Removable Video Anti-Aliasing Filters

Mosaic developed removable optical anti-aliasing filters for selected digital cinema and DSLR camera systems.

These products required optical behavior to be matched with specific camera bodies, sensor formats, available optical paths, installation methods, and real-world use.

OEM OPTICAL ENGINEERING

Custom Optical Low-Pass Filters

The same technical foundation expanded into custom optical low-pass filters for CCD and CMOS imaging systems.

Designs could be developed around factors such as sensor pixel pitch, wavelength range, image displacement, lens performance, color-filter architecture, packaging, and the required sampling response.

Each stage narrowed some parts of the product while deepening the technical knowledge applied to the imaging system.

Optical components and assemblies could then be developed around the sensor, wavelength, geometry, packaging, and production requirements of a customer's complete system.

PRECISION OPTICAL MANUFACTURING

Growing Into Crystal, Polarization, and Custom Optics

As the optical work expanded, Mosaic developed deeper experience with birefringent materials, polarization control, precision fabrication, multilayer assemblies, and application-specific optical components.

That work has included quartz and lithium-niobate components, polarization optics, optical anti-aliasing stacks, structured-light optics, crystal assemblies, and filters for specialized imaging applications.

The current optical business continues to build manufacturing and metrology capability around precision polishing, assembly, clean handling, dimensional control, interferometric measurement, and application-specific engineering.

Mosaic Optoelectronics carries forward the organization's optical and imaging heritage. Additional business units are being developed around communications, technical education, and longer-term investment in engineering-driven businesses.
